Noah Song was recently selected in the Rule 5 Draft by the Phillies, plucking him from the Red Sox organization while still in the process of finishing a military commitment. Song was selected in the fourth-round of the 2019 MLB Draft by Boston and ends his tenure with the club after throwing 17 innings for their Lowell (A-) affiliate in 2019.
Luckily for me, I had Boston’s entire system in my coverage that year and caught one of his seven starts on the season. He only threw one frame in the outing I saw, but he showed three of his four offerings in the brief start and left a significant impression on me and the other scouts in the park at the time.
Song hasn’t pitched in an official game for the organization since that season due to the military service commitment I noted earlier. This report below was written as if Song wasn’t about to go off to military service, because at the time it was still in question whether he’d be required to do so. Just felt it was important to note that for some context when viewing this report.
I thought it’d be fun to look back at what I thought of Song right after seeing one of his few professional starts now that his name has jumped back into relevance with the 2022 Rule 5 Draft, here you go:
