KC Premier in Overland Park held their 2023 Pro Day Saturday and one of the Minor League free agents who threw a bullpen was Grant Gavin. He was especially sharp in his session and I wanted to put a write-up along with some video up here from that.
FB (92-95): Four-seam showed solid carry through the zone. Below average command. Averaged 91.3 mph in 2022- frame was in shape, velocity jump encouraging.
SL (82-84): Flashed a couple average ones that had two-plane break and teeth to it. Inconsistent ability to land in zone and shortened up on occasion.
CUT (88-91): Only threw a couple- offering showed short, quick action.
SPL (82-84): Bread and butter pitch. Showed several plus splitters that featured late dive action along with significant depth. In addition to the sharp, late action, he showed impressive feel for the offering overall. Swing and miss capable offering.
I came away from the KC Premier event especially impressed with Gavin, notably the splitter. Relievers who have a swing and miss offering in their arsenal always have a shot to succeed in a relief role, and Gavin showed he has that in the split. If I’m an organization and in need of bullpen depth in the upper Minor League ranks, I’d be giving Gavin a call.
